Floor Finishes: Vinyl Composite Tiles (VCT)

If you’re looking for a durable and affordable flooring option for your office, look no further than vinyl composite tiles, or VCT.

Commonly seen in hospitals and medical facilities, these tiles are long lasting and designed to withstand all sorts of wear and tear.

On the other hand, the aesthetic doesn’t exactly scream class, and they are prone to fading with time and overexposure to UV rays.

If you’re considering utilising VCT in your office design, here’s a little more information.

Pros

Durable

VCT flooring is an extremely durable material, lasting upwards of 20 years. The tiles are extremely stable and resistant to all sorts of wear and tear, as well as moisture damage.

Flexibility

VCT is versatile, in that it can come in all shapes, sizes, colours and patterns. This makes it a good choice for an unconventional space.

Spill Resistant

Spill and stain resistance should always be considered when designing your office, and it’s one reason as to why many have avoided incorporating carpet into their office design.

With that in mind, VCT is an excellent option. When it’s polished and waxed, VCT flooring is completely impervious to moisture.

Noise

In a busy office environment, minimising noise is another important consideration.

VCT flooring is great for the acoustics in your office, as footfalls on VCT are not as loud as on other flooring options, such as concrete and hardwood.

Cons

Installation

Installing VCT can be a tricky and involved process.

This is due to the fact that the surface it’s being applied to needs to be completely flat, and any slight bumps or small debris can make the tiles brittle later on.

Difficult to Remove

The strong adhesive used when installing VCT can make this material difficult to remove. If you decide to renovate your office down the track, removal will be costly and time consuming.

It Can Fade

With excessive UV exposure, VCT flooring is prone to fading. It will take a long time for this to happen, but when it does your floor finish will look tired and dull.

Aesthetic

Due to its ability to withstand plenty of foot traffic and all kinds of spills, VCT flooring is most common in retail and medical facilities.

Therefore, the aesthetic that this surface gives off can often be described as ‘sterile’. That’s not exactly a welcoming vibe for your office space.
